The Berimbau
The main instrument of Capoeira, the Berimbau, is composed of:
- - a caxixi,
- - a bagueta,
- - an arame,
- - a beriba wood verga,
- - a calabash
- - a pedra.
In the Capoeira Regional one can use one, two or three Berimbau. There are three different types of Berimbau classified according to their sound and the size of the calabash.
The Berimbau Gunga with a grave tone. It is often used by the teacher or the most senior student of the roda. When used in the roda, it maintains the rhythm by always performing the base of it.
The Berimbau Medio with a medium tone. When used in the roda, it plays a rhythm in accordance with Berimbau Gunga. It can be a different rhythm.
The Berimbau Viola with a treble tone. It is the soloist of the orchestra, it does not stay much on the basis of rhythm and makes a lot of variations.
The Atabaque
The Atabaque is a percussion instrument that was not used by Mestre Bimba to avoid confusion. Indeed, the Atabaques are instruments used during rituals in Brazil (Candomblé).
